What is Sal Leaf?

Sal Tree (Shorea Robusta) mostly growing in the Indian Subcontinent. Common like other tree leaves, Sal Tree leaves are biodegraded and compost in nature after the end of their life cycle. This leave are looks thin but its strong, sturdy and remain green in color for longer period. These unique Natural characteristics and Nature gift to human beings allow us to use dry Sal Tree Leaf for a kitchenware item.

History of Patravali

Patravali or Pattal or Vistaraku or Vistar or Khali is an Indian eating plate or trencher made with broad dried leaves. It is mainly made from Sal leaves. It is also made from Banyan tree leaves. It is made in circular shape, by stitching 6 to 8 sal leaves with tiny wooden sticks.

[1] It is popular during traditional meals, festivals and in temples.

[2] It is a cottage industry in India where women work on weaving them at home in spare time.

villagers collect the Sal leaves from the surrounding areas. These leaves are collected sustainably by hand without harm the trees.

Stitching

After being washed, bamboo fibres are used to stitch the leaves together before being dried.

Pressing

Using a hydraulic press, the layers of stitched leaves are pressed together to create the product which keeps its shape thanks to the natural oils and robustness of the Sal leaves.

Finishing

Once the bowls and plates have been machine pressed into shape the edges are then cut and they are ready to be packed.

Colour on the Surface

Each Sal leaves has its unique variety of natural colour tones. Sometimes it has a dark black spot in a dotted or odd shape. These are colour tone variations is by nature and it’s OK to use. It will NOT impact the food quality or test or impact health

Using Cotton Thread

The Sal leaves relatively small about 6” to 8” in size. These leaves are hand sticked using small sticks or by swing machine using cotton thread. Both stitching material stick, and cotton thread are OK to use for food serving
